Mediterranean Fan Palms are smaller, shrub like palm trees. They grow as a cluster with multiple trunks from the same root ball, though you can grow them as a single trunk if you continually remove new sprouts and pups. These palms grow very slowly, but can grow as tall as 20ft in ideal conditions.
As their name suggests, these palms are native to the Mediterranean Coastal regions of Southern Europe and North Africa. It is one of the northernmost naturally growing palm trees, and one of only two palms native to Europe. Mediterranean Fan Palms play an important ecological role in their native habitats.
We love these palms for Las Vegas because they are drought tolerant, cold hardy, and relatively easy to maintain. This is one of the few trees we would recommend planted near pools, and they make specimen trees for courtyards or other small spaces. They also make great secondary trees.
Maintaining and Trimming Mediterranean Fan Palms
These palms don’t need much help to thrive. Maintenance mostly entails trimming to keep them clean. We typically trim fronds high enough so they aren’t overlapping with the other trunk’s fronds, remove the berries, and cut out new sprouts and pups growing at the base.
